Some History

Beginning in 1934 as the sprawling 15-acre home of bohemian philanthropists John and Sunday Reed, Heide birthed the Australian modernist movement. The couple were dedicated to supporting emerging artists (Sidney Nolan even painted his Ned Kelly series while sitting at their dining table) and in the 1950s they opened their art collection to the public.

By 1964 the gallery expanded to include the stunning mid-century home Heide II. Designed as a ‘gallery to live in’, Heide II is a testament to how ahead of the curve the Reed’s were in their thinking. The Reeds lived in Heide II for thirteen years until 1980, a year before their deaths. Abundant in natural light and built with minimal materials (timber, brick, concrete and glass), it has since become an architectural icon.

In 1993, Heide III - a dedicated public gallery and the site’s main exhibition space - was complete. Today, the grounds of Heidi are known world-over for their multiple galleries and sculpture garden, while the Reeds have gone down in history as two of Australia's most important art benefactors.
