A Complete Candle Care Guide

A well-tended candle rewards you with a cleaner burn and a fuller, more expressive scent. Consider this your guide to getting the most from every LEIF fragrance.

At LEIF we’ve long believed that a candle can do more than scent a room – it sets the tone, working in harmony with light, furnishings and other surrounding elements. And whether your preference is the grounding smokiness of cult favourite Buddha Wood or the dewy grassiness of Flannel Flower, each of our hand-poured soy blend wax formulas is designed to shape a mood through fragrance – and burn best when treated with a little care.

Below, discover the essential steps to help your candle last longer, burn more evenly and fill your space with its full aromatic profile.

Start With the Perfect First Burn

The first burn determines how your candle performs for the rest of its life (no pressure… but really, this is an easy win). Always allow the wax to melt all the way to the glass vessel’s edge before extinguishing. This sets the candle’s “memory” and prevents tunnelling – the common issue where wax burns straight down the centre, reducing both burn time and fragrance throw. For richer scents like Boronia, which features deeper resinous notes of amber, oud and floral spice, this step makes all the difference for achieving a consistently even melt.

Trim the Wick Every Time

A well-trimmed wick (around 5mm) creates a clean, steady flame and reduces soot. Before each burn, trim the wick to this length to avoid smoking or an overly tall flame. This simple habit helps your candle last longer while ensuring the scent disperses evenly throughout your space.

For safety, always extinguish the candle when roughly 10mm of wax remains.

Keep the Wax Pool Clear

Dust, wick fragments and other debris can disrupt the flame. Keep the wax surface clean and aim to extinguish your candle with a snuffer rather than blowing it out – this prevents smoke and protects the scent’s integrity. If any soot appears on the vessel, wait until it has completely cooled before wiping gently with a damp cloth.

Choose the Right Spot

Where your candle sits can influence how it burns. Place it on a stable, heat-resistant surface, away from draughts, open windows, fans or air-conditioning vents. These air currents can cause uneven burning and reduce fragrance throw. Avoid direct sunlight and keep out of reach of children, pets and flammable objects. And as always, never leave a candle unattended.

Store Thoughtfully Between Burns

To maintain its fragrance, store your candle in a cool, dry place between uses. Keeping it away from heat and light preserves your favourite aroma.

With the right care, your LEIF candle won’t just scent a room – it will uplift it. By establishing a steady burn, trimming regularly and storing thoughtfully, each candle can deliver its full aromatic potential from the first light to the final flicker.
